Following Jesus means...

Trusting.  The life that you and I are being called to live is not one that is for the faint of heart, we have all found that out haven't we? In fact it is a life that will require you and me to follow the Lord even when the path has been laid out only a few feet at a time.  Some of you are planners, some of you like to have things laid out months and years in advance.  You've have worked out all the possible scenarios that could play out.  It seems though that part of the life of followers of Jesus is learning to trust when we don't know the path, of trusting His word when the ways is not clear.  When everything seems to be making sense and everything is running smoothly it is an easy thing to trust and obey, but when things get out of sorts and things that you had counted on suddenly don't transpire, that is when trusting the Lord is put to the test. You may be in one of those places right now.  You may be saying to the Lord, I want to trust but it is hard when we don't know the way.

Remember that Abraham  was told to go to a land that God would show him, he was to leave his family, his comfort even his own county and trust God by following and obeying. Abraham did it and God said that it was a wonderful example to all of us of what faith is.  It seems so foreign to us, (or maybe just to me) to obey willingly without questioning or hesitation.  There are times in each of our lives that it seems that nothing makes sense, there is an awareness that things are not as they should be but we cannot figure out why things don't seem right, or worse yet something difficult is happening and you begin to wonder and doubt our Lord's faithfulness. Trusting God is hard for us because we often times limit God to human experience, everyone we have ever known or ever will know has the potential to let us down and yet the Lord says, He never will.  He will never leave us or forsake us and He will be there to guide us as we follow His heart and His ways, we are asking God to be who He is, Faithful, True and Loving.  That is where following Jesus means to trust Him in spite of the things that are happening around you or the people who may even become like Job's friends who were not very supportive in their approach or others who will be quick to point out where we missed it.  But the Lord is not that way; He can be trusted to always work out the challenges of our lives out for His glory and our benefit.  Discipleship is taking on a whole new definition for me, one in which I as the disciple are being called by the Lord to surrender my will and my ways into His hands and to trust Jesus to lead me through the path that He has planned for me.  Like the words of the hymn, "Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him, how I've proved Him o'er and o'er Jesus, Jesus precious Jesus oh for grace to trust Him more.   As this new week begins with all that will happen in the days to come, I am praying that prayer for all of us, oh for grace to trust Jesus more.
